Reserve items removed

Several reserve items have been withdrawn from our collection due to non-renewal from the faculty members who submitted them.  They are:

Item # B-315-316 Art of theatre: then and now (2nd edition)
Item # B-441 Noteworthy (3rd edition)
Item # B-442 Introducing cultural anthropology (3rd edition)
Item # B-454-456 Efficient and flexible reading (9th edition)

Gace Test Prep

Most of you may have noticed that we now have 7 GACE test prep books on reserve. The loan period is 1 week. Please be mindful when you write down the date and time that the book is due. For instance, Voyager may generate a return date/time of 10/12/2011 at 11:59pm. Since the library closes Mon-Thurs at 10:00pm and Friday at 5:00pm, please adjust the time accordingly when you write it down on the date due slip. It should read like this instead: 10/12/2011 at 9:45pm. If the due date falls on a Friday, the return time should read 4:45pm.

We do not want any confusion with students should they try to return these books after 10:00pm and find that the library is closed.

Reserve pick up

Michael Bradley will be by later on this week to pick up some items that he has taken off of reserve. These books are located on the shelf in the reserve workroom with a sticky note with his name.

2 day reserve textbook

Please note: I have added two new books into the reserves: Structures of Life: General, Organic, and Biological Chemistry, vol 1 & 2.

Volume 1 (Item #B-823) is a 2 DAY reserve. That means that a student can check this item out and take it with them and keep it for 2 days. You'll need to charge, desensitize, and write the correct due date on the book. A fine of $5 is charged for each DAY that this book is overdue.






















Volume 2 (Item #B-824) is a 2 HOUR reserve. Treat it as you normally would a reserve book.

Polishing

Hi all,

Recently we decided to pare down our reserves collection of The Polishing Cloth. Most of the collection has been relocated to the stacks on the 3rd floor. There are currently 4 copies of The Polishing Cloth on reserve now. They have been re-numbered Item #P-1, Item #P-2, Item #P-3, and Item #P-4. Most students who come to the desk to check out The Polishing Cloth usually want the most recent edition (#P-4) and ask for it by name.

Reorganizing/renumbering reserve books

Within the next couple of days you may notice the reserve books being shuffled around. I am hoping to re-organize and re-number them so that all of the books are roughly organized according to subject. NOTE: We are still using the ITEM # system that we have in place. I just wanted to try to keep all the math, history, science, etc. books somewhat together. I hope this won't cause too much confusion or take up too much time!

Reserves

Hi all,

If you've been in the reserve workroom, you may have noticed that there are a significantly less number of reserve books on the shelf. Many have been sent back to instructors who have chosen not to renew items for the summer. This means that there will be items that students may want that we no longer carry. :( Please relay the message to students who may inquire and encourage them to check the course reserves system on our catalog to see what items we do have.

Calculators

A few things to note:

• Students can now check out graphing calculators and take them out of the library for a period of 3 hours. No renewals are allowed.

• The standard $5/hour overdue fine for reserves applies to graphing calculators. The replacement cost is $100.

• Two new calculators have been added to our collection. We now have a total of 6 calculators: C-1, C-2, C-3, C-5, C-6, and C-7. There is no C-4 (this calculator had been withdrawn from our collection sometime ago.)

Pamela Gore Reserves

I'm sure that all of you are familiar with Pam Gore's rocks/minerals/fossils reserve items in the reserve room.
I just wanted to pass around the news that ALL of her reserves are now 2 hour reserves and ONLY for use within the library.

There may possibly be some irate students, but just make them aware that this was a decision made by Ms. Gore and is out of our hands.

Laptops

EDIT

Laptop 1 has been fixed by OIT. If any of the patrons complain of laptops going into "Maintenance Mode", please put that computer to the side and notify me. These computers will more than likely need to be fixed by OIT (it has something to do with the clock on the computer and Deep Freeze, which requires Administrator privileges, accessible only by OIT.)

We've had several problems regarding the laptops in the past week. Here's a quick rundown:

Laptop 1: When the laptop starts up, it automatically goes into Maintenance Mode and disables the keyboard and mouse. OIT is supposed to come and take a look at it. The laptop is in the cabinet with all of the other laptops in the reserve room. It has a visible sign on it so you'll know that it's for OIT.

Jerome was kind enough to test if the laptops/cords/laptop bags triggers the alarm. Unfortunately, all of them did not, but I have gone ahead and put new sensitized strips on all the items. That should--hopefully--fix the problem.

Laptop 8: This was charged out to a patron (C. Littlejohn) who walked out with the laptop. He has since then returned the laptop.

Kindly remind students (and I know that you all do anyway) that laptops are for use within the library only.

Also, please advise students that if they want to save their documents, that the desktop or hard drive of the computers are not the best place for them. If the computers shut down for any reason, these documents will be lost. We use Deep Freeze on the laptops, which wipe all downloaded or saved info on the computer.

Thank you all so much for your diligence and help in this rough patch with the laptops.

Reserve item to be retrieved

Just wanted you all to be aware that Paul Vogler, an instructor here at GPC, will be by in a couple days to retrieve a book (Experiencing Jazz, item # 952) that he submitted to be put on reserve. When he does, please let me know so I can remove the title from our OPAC Reserves collection. Thank you.

Mr. Vogler came by and picked up his reserve item. He indicated that he may bring it back in the future to put on reserve again.

Update - Problem with online laptop renewals

Ameet reported back in early September that patrons were not able to renew their laptops online (See September 9th post.) It turns out this glitch is a known bug, and has been fixed in v. 7.1.1 of the OPAC. Unfortunately, it doesn't look like we'll be upgrading to 7.1.1 anytime soon.

This means that you will need continue to inform everyone that they will have to bring laptops back to the desk for renewal.

You may also want to warn them that, due to a system bug, they will be unable to renew any of their other materials, online, as long as they have the laptop charged out. They should, however, still be able to place requests on materials in the OPAC, check the GALILEO password, etc.

Problem with online laptop renewals

It looks like there is a glitch with the laptops in Voyager. Basically, students are not able to renew laptops online. Tessa is looking into it and, hopefully, this is a temporary problem that should be fixed by tomorrow.

In the meantime (i.e. Wednesday evening and Thursday morning) please ask students to lug those laptops to the desk to renew.

LAPTOPS! Now... 2 hour checkout

...with 2 renewals allowed!

Beginning tomorrow, the laptop circulation period will be reduced to two hours (currently it is three hours). Patrons will be able to renew laptops twice, and can renew them online by logging into their GIL account (so, no more dragging the machine to the circ desk).

Reserves items for fall semester

Please forward any Reserves-related requests or other Reserves issues to me. I sent out a message to faculty who have items on reserve to contact me for renewal of their materials, so we should have an increase in Reserves activity over the next few weeks as instructors prepare for the fall term.

Damaged Reserve Textbooks

There are three reserve textbooks that are damaged and have a status of "Clarkston Workroom". We are taking steps to getting them repaired or replaced. Until then, please refer students to the substitution copy, if applicable, or let the students know that they are unavailable.

GEOL 1121 Reserve

A textbook (B-486) has been placed on reserve for GEOL 1121 (D. Altin). On the inside cover is a CD-ROM (B-487). When patrons request either of these reserve items, please charge BOTH textbook and CD-ROM. The instructor is adamant that CD-ROM be returned and in working condition with no physical damages (You do not have to run the CD-ROM each time it is returned. Just check to make sure it isn't broken.). Don't forget to discharge the CD-ROM as well. Otherwise, patron will be accrue fines. Thank you!

Who's Who Nominations Folder on Reserve

A bright yellow folder with the Who's Who applications have been placed in the reserve room shelf until Friday, March 20th. A list of all the people who should have access to it is attached. Please check off each person on the list as they come by for the folder. Leave the sheet with the names on the shelf. If you have any questions, please ask Amy. Thanks!

Reserve Date Due Issue

On Friday afternoon around 3pm, I charged a laptop to a patron and noticed that the due date was set to the following day at 10am. After speaking with Tessa, it looks like there’s nothing that can be done. Please be extra careful when charging out materials (particularly in-house reserve items) within 3 hours of the library closing. Although the due date may be set till the following day in the system, make sure to note on the due date slip that the patron must return reserve items 15 minutes before library closes. For example, if a student checks out a laptop on Friday afternoon at 2pm, please note on the slip that the reserve item is due back at 4:15pm, even if the systems sets it to 4:30pm or 10am Saturday morning when the library reopens. This will ensure that students are not penalized for any late returns.Thank you!

Geology Rock Collection (Reserves)

Please note that many some of the Geology Lab Reserves items (i.e. rock and fossil collections) will be temporarily unavailable until Thursday Friday. I am working with Geology faculty to identify and organize the collection. We will also be removing some of the older lab materials which are not getting much use.

Some of the collection may be available by tomorrow, so please check the Reserves shelf if students ask for Geology lab materials.
