Reserve items removed

Several reserve items have been withdrawn from our collection due to non-renewal from the faculty members who submitted them.  They are:

GIL Express suspension for winter break

Per email from Viki Timian (Head of Access Services, UGA):

The winter holidays are fast approaching and with that brings closings and the routine suspension of GIL Express Remote Requests. Based on the library closings:

The last day for GE Remote requests would be Tuesday 12/13 (suspend at 11:59pm) Allowing for a few days to process those requests, the last day for STAT deliveries/pickups would be Friday 12/16.

Patrons will still be able to do walk-up transactions during this time - only the request function in the UC will be unavailable.

We will resume GE Remote requests on Monday 1/2. Some schools will be closed this day but there will be requests in our Callslips to process the next morning. All schools are back in session on Tuesday 1/3 so that is when STAT deliveries/pickups will resume. A scrolling banner will be prepared and will appear in the Universal Catalog on 12/1 letting patrons know.

JagSpot

The JagSpot (room CL2350)--formerly known as the computer lab--is now open for business. The computers have been moved from the 3^rd floor back to the newly renovated area. (Note: The library still has computers up on the 3^rd floor for students to use.) Among the services offered, the JagSpot has a fax machine for student use as well as Mac computers and a color printer.

Patron expiration

If you have someone come to the desk that has an expired patron account, please fill out a patron referral form. One of the Circ. staff members will work to resolve the issue.

We are no longer using the GPC Proof of Employment forms.

Gace Test Prep

Most of you may have noticed that we now have 7 GACE test prep books on reserve. The loan period is 1 week. Please be mindful when you write down the date and time that the book is due. For instance, Voyager may generate a return date/time of 10/12/2011 at 11:59pm. Since the library closes Mon-Thurs at 10:00pm and Friday at 5:00pm, please adjust the time accordingly when you write it down on the date due slip. It should read like this instead: 10/12/2011 at 9:45pm. If the due date falls on a Friday, the return time should read 4:45pm.

We do not want any confusion with students should they try to return these books after 10:00pm and find that the library is closed.

Netbooks

We have 10 new netbooks available for GPC faculty, staff, and student use (not available for check out to UB patrons or retired/foundation patrons.) The netbooks are stored in the same cabinet as the laptops.

When checking them out to students, treat them the same as you would a laptop. They have a 2 hour check out period.

Taped on the inside of the cabinet door is an inventory of the items.

Reserve pick up

Michael Bradley will be by later on this week to pick up some items that he has taken off of reserve. These books are located on the shelf in the reserve workroom with a sticky note with his name.

Portable DVD Players

The 3 portable DVD players that were in the reserve room with the laptops now have a new home. If students ask for them, you can refer them to Non-Print.

2 day reserve textbook

Please note: I have added two new books into the reserves: Structures of Life: General, Organic, and Biological Chemistry, vol 1 & 2.

Volume 1 (Item #B-823) is a 2 DAY reserve. That means that a student can check this item out and take it with them and keep it for 2 days. You'll need to charge, desensitize, and write the correct due date on the book. A fine of $5 is charged for each DAY that this book is overdue.






















Volume 2 (Item #B-824) is a 2 HOUR reserve. Treat it as you normally would a reserve book.

New computer furniture

The library is getting new computer furniture for the second floor (the area in front of the Circulation desk.) Things may get a little hectic with the temporary loss of the use of those computers. HOWEVER, the library instruction classroom (CL2220) has been reserved for GPC students so they can have access to computers. This move should not affect our day-to-day schedule with the exception of pointing students in the direction of the classroom.

Here's a basic timeline of the furniture installation, outlined by Eva in an email:

November 22

In the morning, OIT will take down all the student use computers and printers on 2^nd and 3^rd floors including the reference desk computers

By late morning, early afternoon the movers will begin removing the old furniture, including the reference desk from the building as well as moving some larger pieces to different areas of the building. Some of the 3^rd floor furniture that is currently used for student computers will be moved into Nonprint area so we can take advantage of some of the floor electrical outlets for student use.

November 23-24

Plant services will work on electrical outlets and data line installation with all the old furniture out of their way

November 25-28

Holidays!!

November 29-30

New furniture installation

December 1-2

OIT will install all the student use/reference desk computers and printers on the new furniture

The library classroom, CL2220 has been reserved during this time for GPC students to have access to computers. Reference librarians and assistants will staff the classroom during the move-- Ann will provide more details when she sends out the reference desk schedules for the next two weeks.

Yes, it there will be some inconvenience for everyone, but it should be worth it! Everyone might want to dress casually during all of this.
